Ahmedabad: From March 2010, student internships will not remain a privilege of students of medicine, technology and management alone.
The state’s Department of Higher Education plans to introduce an internship scheme for final-year students of degree courses in five faculties – Science, Arts, Commerce, Law andEducation.
The scheme, which will offer internships of one or two months to selected students at different institutes of excellence, will be available to students of all government-aided universities of the state.
Sources in the higher education department said that the selected students will get a chance to serve as interns at various institutes.
Some of these institutes are the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG) and the Gujarat Forensic Science University. Students can also opt for internships with industrial houses, chartered accountancy firms and other professional organisations.
The internship scheme will be launched by March 2010. Sources said students for the scheme will be selected by a screening committee.
“Students opting for internships will be able to have a hands-on experience of the practical aspects of their subjects,” a source said. “We will send students as interns to institutes related to their
subject of study.”
